Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) was developed in China a long time ago, some believe as far back as seven thousand years. It is the process of balancing the energies within a space to obtain health and good fortune for those residing in the space. The fundamentals behind the practice of feng shui are based on the Taoist understanding that the land is alive with energy- also known as Chi.
Basic feng shui can yield powerful results and is used in homes and businesses all over the world. The core knowledge can take years to study and there are several different schools of feng shui. Feng shui can be applied to many areas of life including the home, business, real estate, the garden, renovations, health, love and marriage, money, seasons and celebrations, and children’s rooms and nurseries.
While feng shui can be very complicated there are several tools that are used to get started. A special map containing symbols of I-ching called the Bagua is applied to every room to decide the placement of items. The Bagua has eight sectors: prosperity, love, family and well being, character, vocation or career, wisdom, travel, and creativity and children.
Another tool used in feng shui is the compass called the lo pan. The lo pan represents the mysteries of the universe and can be challenging to use. Some other tools that are a little more basic are the concepts of yin and yang and the five elements.
Yin and yang represent the idea of balance between energy and change. Feng shui incorporates the use of the five elements: water, fire, metal, wood, and earth. Placement of objects and furnishings in living spaces in certain areas relating to the elements and Bagua can increase the flow of positive energy in the home.
Feng shui also has some principles surrounding colors as well. Painting the walls certain colors or placing objects of a certain color changes the energies to yield different results. White walls for example will enhance creativity.
Blue is the color of protection and represents calm passive energy. Blue walls are good for those with high levels of anxiety. Green stands for love and new growth. Red is the color of passion and power. Yellow encourages communication and gold is beneficial for those dealing with past hurt. Purple is the most spiritual of colors and encourages connections with a higher power.
Using colors is one of the easiest ways to begin with feng shui. Learning how to incorporate the five elements would probably be the next simplest step. Try finding items that clearly represent the five elements and display them prominently. The Bagua map is not as difficult as it appears to be, but the compass can be a little trickier.
